Microsoft’s investing in CDN for a lot of their ajax scripts and also jQuery, we already knew that for a while. Now they also added support for SSL so when you use your site with https it shouldn’t give an enduser the warning anymore about mixed content. The very well known “This page contains both secure and nonsecure items” message.

There’s a whole list available out there: http://www.asp.net/ajaxlibrary/cdn.ashx.

At first I didn’t see the dataservice.js scripts anymore, the ones that enable people to use ajax against ADO.NET Data Services, I mean WCF Data Services after the product got renamed, but they also got renamed to:

  • http://ajax.microsoft.com/ajax/beta/0911/MicrosoftAjaxAdoNet.js

Besides the new CDN SSL feature there’s also a new Library available for Microsoft Ajax. Also quite a lot of new tutorials have been added for the new Ajax library.

Since more and more people are using ajax and as such javascript/ecmascript, you as a developer/designer need tools to make it through the day. Here are some that I like to use:

Going on vacation to Greece without pc or internet connection (but in very good company) is nice but you always find when coming home that new cool things have arrived. This time it turned out to be the long awaited Silverlight 3.

There’s an interesting video on Channel 9 with Scott Guthrie on the new things that shipped and also a new dedicated site. Be sure to check these out.

With the new version there’s also need of a tool to build compelling RIAs with. This is still in Release candidate but you can already check out Blend 3.

I just tried to download Firefox 3 from their official site. However that seems to be down. Luckily one of my US buddies, Kevin Jones, knew another site where you can download the goods: http://mozilla.isohunt.com/firefox/releases/3.0/win32/.

I hope this also counts for the download marathon.

Just found out about this site: (http://www.hownerdyareyou.be/). It's a site to popularize jobs in IT in Belgium amongst youngsters so it's only available in Dutch and French.

I used this site already before but then it only showed just plain links to blog articles or channel 9 videos. When I just took a look it was completely restyled. The Silverlight usage for the ticker looks pretty interesting but seems to lack content at the moment of writing.

You can already start downloading the MIX08 sessions. I just finished watching the keynote and boy am I looking forward to Silverlight 2 final edition. Also the new capabilities of IE8 are looking very promising and I bet every web developer/designer is really looking forward to the support of CSS2.1 in it. Hopefully Microsoft decides to push IE8 to every windows installation as soon as possible after the final release so we can get rid of IE6/7 incompatibilities and CSS hacks just to get it to work.

if you're into Microsoft technology you'll probably know about Channel 9 and On10. While I was surfing/investigating the revamped ASP.NET site I noticed a new entry in the community toolbar: Channel 8.

Channel 8 is THE place to be for STUDENTS who want to code, connect and create technology. Stay plugged into tech news and share in the experience with students around the world just like you who want to see their creations come to life. This is also a back door directly into Microsoft just like Channel 9 but from a student point of view. This means access to the inside scoop about our products and life working inside Microsoft and information on cool things coming out. This is your community – a place for you to share your tips and tricks and even your problems. Go check out what others are doing and talk about what you think is cool.

I hope a lot of interesting content will come up there just like on Channel 9. More to watch for all of us.

One of the nice things when you gather with a bunch of tech minded people like yourself (Microsoft VIP Community Offsite 2007) is that you get to know urls to interesting tech stuff. Apparently already very known, except by me are the MSDN UK nuggets. Some small, interesting videos that highlight a specific topic in 10-15 minutes. I sure do like the idea as most webcasts are too long or they want to cover as much as possible in an as short as possible time span with as endresult that nobody gets the message.

Another one that I found related to that, and one that seems very new so most of my tech savvy friends don't know about it untill when they read my blog is this Nibbles site. It seems to only have some tutorials at the moment, especially focussed on Blend and Silverlight/WPF. As I'm keen on learning both I'll sure be checking this one out.

I just found out that Telerik's creating a code conversion tool: http://converter.telerik.com/. It looks pretty slick with AJAX integration. No wonder because Telerik's been very busy on that part.

Another conversion tool that I used during the last couple of years are these: C# to VB.NET and VB.NET to C#.

Update: Gill pointed out in the comments that #Develop also has this functionality.

Yesterday I attended a workshop about WPF, WCF & WF given at Ordina. One of the presenters used a little tool that I saw Ingo Rammer use also a couple of months ago. The tool itself's called ZoomIt and is able to zoom in during a presentation and also provides a pen to draw on the screen while viewing.

It's free and if you're into presenting you can definitely use such a handy tool.

I found out about this new page on ASP.NET, thanks to PeteL and Brian Goldfarb: By the Community, For the Community.

The By The Community, For the Community samples series will create ASP.NET samples that are in high demand. These samples will not be created by Microsoft but instead by a select group of ASP.NET community member MVPs. You can see their bios below.

On a regular basis, starting Friday July 7th, we will publish a list of potential samples and allow the community to vote on which sample they are most interested in seeing developed. After the voting ends, the select MVPs will then create the sample using best practices. The samples will be published and then linked to from this page on www.asp.net.

So go out and vote for the stuff that you want these guys to create! Personally I love this idea. There are a lot of smart people out there with an MVP status and they're getting more attention. Just think of the Wrox book MVP hacks for example. The ASP.NET forums also have a bunch of MVP people hanging around to help out other people.
