On Wednesday I performed a presentation about WebMatrix and its components: Razor syntax, the WebMatrix IDE, SQL CE and IIS Express. All great products created by Microsoft.

Here are the slides:

Yesterda I went to Kinepolis in Brussels for what was going to be a great afternoon. Scott Guthrie doesn’t come every year to Belgium, actually it was its second time, so when he does you better be there to hear what he’s talking about.

The guys from Visug did a great job preparing the event and had prepared a little fun ingredient for Scott. Everybody got to wear red polo shirts:

The session itself covered the following topics:

For me personally it was a great opportunity to see and talk with Scott again after the last MVP summit and there was some pretty interesting content about web related technologies (my favorite). Microsoft’s really doing a great job for webdevelopers with brining out new tools, new little additions to a more maturing web platform (ASP.NET 4.0), investing in new ways to let developers develop close to the raw metal with MVC and making it possible for them to create compelling applications with Silverlight.

One of the nice intros about Silverlight is its streaming capabilities with a cool pixar style animation: http://www.iis.net/media/experiencesmoothstreaming.

In case you're still unaware of it, Community day is going to be held on June 26th. This is a free day with interesting technical content provided by the combined forces of several Belgian user groups. Be sure to check out the agenda of what's provided that day.

I'm also going to be there so if you'd like to say, hi just come over and do so.

Last Thursday I attended a Visug seminar about WCF. This session was presented by Juwal Lowy, a dedicated and well known employee of IDesign. The session was great, really great. Juwal's a great presenter that could even make the belgian crowd to laugh on several occasions. That might seem strange but most foreign speakers know how hard it is to interact with a Belgian audience that mostly doesn't make sound and watches the presentation with a lot of interest. I've already followed several WCF presentations during the last years (TechEd, tech days, ...) but this one was actually the one I liked best. Most presentations show a host and a client and then dive right into the config files. Not this one. We got shown little chunks at a time and more about the architecture. Not so much configuration but small samples which showed the stuff. I liked this approach a lot.

Like Silverlight? Like search? Like them combined? If so be sure to check out the new Tafiti search engine. I especially liked the treeview option where you can see, in a rotating tree, what's been found. Probably it won't replace, for me anyway, google or live search but it shows the possibilities that you can obtain when using Silverlight.
Speaking of which, if you're in Belgium on September 20th you can join the VISUG meeting about Silverlight. I'll be there too.

Several Belgian user groups, BIWUG, VISUG, SQLUG, IT-Talks, and Pro-Exchange, will be having a community day on juni 28th. If you're living in Belgium, eager to learn, and just want to talk to peers or have the opportunity to meet new people with the same interests, be sure to check it out!

I also would've loved to come but due to obligations at work I'm unable to attend.

Yesterday evening I had the pleasure to attend the presentations by Scott Guthrie. It was very interesting to see what's coming up in the new version of Visual Studio codenamed 'Orcas'. I like the multi-targeting feature, now you can choose which .NET framework you want to target your solution to: 2.0, 3.0 or 3.5. Another nice feature, and something I'm looking forward to is Javascript intellisense. This'll be a great feature once someone starts developing with ASP.NET AJAX.

Afterwards we had the chance to talk to Scott directly and some group pictures were taken by Sven Mus. I hope he posts them quickly so I can also share them.

Yesterday evening VISUG, a .NET related Belgian user group in which I participate, organised a geek dinner in Antwerp. 12 participants showed up and we had a blast. Talking about work, tech stuff, .NET (of course), comics, movies, ... There were some people I haven't met before so it was also great to socialize with those as well. The food, spare ribs à volonté, was also delicious and if you visit Antwerp on an occasion I can recommend the Amadeus restaurant.

Yesterday I attended the meeting of Visug, a Belgian user group of which I'm a member, with as meetings subject Exception handling and logging. It wasn't a traditional way of presenting but was more like an open discussion which became quite lively at moments. Especially when we reached the stage of discussing the differences between logging and auditing.

It was very interesting to hear different oppinions because of the mixed audiance: architects, developers and even an IT pro who wanted to learn more about .NET and see what the impact could be to the servers he maintains.

I'm already looking forward to the Geek Dinner next week in Antwerp with the fellow members of Visug. If you want more information you can take a look at the site.
