Last week Thursday I did my first presentation in Germany at the Basta! conference in Frankfurt. I had a fully packed room and had a blast. Being one of the few English only sessions kind of made me to believe up front that I would only have a couple of attendees. Luckily for me that didn’t turn out to be the case. Attentive audience and interested in what I had to say and show. I got a good interaction and was able to make the German audience laugh on several occasions. Not sure if that happens a lot but I found it a positive indication.

After the session I also got a question about chatbots as I mentioned it during my presentation that I’m currently working on one at my client (Bing spellchecker, LUIS, Watson). He introduced me to his manager and I had a lengthy talk about the subject with them about chatbots, data privacy, differences for freelancers/organizations between Germany and Belgium. Later on I saw some of the attendants of my session and asked for some feedback. They liked the session a lot and wanted to install Visual Studio Code and give it a spin. Mission accomplished! All in all I had a blast during Basta!

Years ago I started github.com/KvdM as a place to fiddle around with code and to try to make pull requests from. For reasons I got sidetracked by work a lot and I didn’t participate much in it. Lately I got more interest, and time, again but I found myself locked out of my github. I turned on 2FA (two factor authentication years ago and noted down the recovery codes. Due to a change a couple of years after that, simply signing in and changing my password, apparently also the backup codes were changed and I didn’t notice (or got notified).

Long story short, I wanted to connect with the app on my phone, didn’t work. Tried again, didn’t work. Contacted support, got the  advice to check the time and date on the phone and try again. Didn’t work. Tried one of the recovery codes, didn’t work (then I found out they were apparently outdated and I didn’t know). Contacting and trying with support didn’t work out as I couldn’t prove that it was me.

So, I ended up creating a new Github account under github.com/KrisvanderMast. Hope to see you there. Already got 2 pull requests of open source projects accepted but that’s worth  a future story.

Bottom line: when you want to make use of 2FA be sure to add your cell phone number, on a regular basis check if your recovery code are still ok (or backup them locally every now and then) or work with SSH keys.

2017 already is going to kick off with presentations. Besides Microsoft Cloud Summit I’m also going to speak at the Basta! conference in Frankfurt Germany. This time about Visual Studio Code. I hope to see you there. It’s the first time I’ll be speaking in Germany so I’m looking forward to the adventure.

It’s not the first time I speak in the Netherlands but I was happy to get asked again by the organizational team to come back this year. Unlike the year before when it was in The Hague, this year the venue was in the larger RAI building in Amsterdam. A lot of attendees showed up. From what I heard from the people at Microsoft Netherlands it was a record amount and they didn’t expect that many people showing up in the first place.

The session itself about Azure Web Jobs, same like what I gave the day before in Poland, went great and I had quite some attendees.

In the evening there was a cozy speaker dinner with climbing wall at XPirit.

Today I had the pleasure of giving a presentation about Azure Web Jobs at a nice conference in Poland. It was well organized in a good hotel close to Gdynia. For me it was the first time ever I spoke, and been, in Poland. Attendees and hosts were all very nice people and I noticed a good amount of interest in Azure. I hope to be able to come back to talk more about Azure next year as well.

As a personal note: it’s been my first time to Poland and I really enjoyed it. I’m already thinking of going there on a short holiday with the misses and get to know the country better next year.

In a couple of weeks there will be again a Microsoft Tech Days in the Netherlands. As last year this edition I will be speaking as well. This time not about the F12 developer tools but Azure Web Jobs. I hope to see you there on October 4th as well.

If you are into web development you know there are a bunch of tools out there to make your life easier while concentrating on the things you want or need to focus on. One of these tools is gulp.js. It is an easy one to start with though and it is supported in Visual Studio. If you like a good read and want to get up to speed with gulp fast or already have experience but just want interesting code samples you can download this free ebook at Syncfusion.com.

The name of the writer of this particular book should ring familiar: Kris van der Mast. Yes indeed, that’s me Smile.

I made up a contract to write another book about Azure Web Jobs and I hope to have it ready by end of this year.

Last week witnessed the gathering of Microsoft loving people in Belgium. There were 19 different nationalities at the venue in Mechelen based Kinepolis cinema center.

I was there myself as a speaker about Meteor.js.
